BYD’s New Fang Cheng Bao Brand: Meet the Leopard 5, a Rugged Plug-In Hybrid Off-Roader
BYD is expanding its lineup with Fang Cheng Bao, a new SUV-focused sub-brand that slots between Denza and the ultra-luxury YangWang. The brand’s first model, the Leopard 5, is a tough, ladder-frame-based plug-in hybrid off-roader designed to take on heavyweights like the Toyota Land Cruiser Prado.
Design & Dimensions: A Bold, Off-Road-Ready Look
Unveiled ahead of its official debut at the Chengdu Auto Show, the Leopard 5 has a boxy, aggressive stance with flared fenders, aluminum skid plates, and a rear-mounted spare tire—classic off-roader vibes. Buyers can choose between 18-inch BFGoodrich all-terrain tires for serious adventures or 20-inch Michelin Pilot Sport rubber for smoother rides.
At 4,890 mm (192.5 in) long, it’s slightly smaller than the Land Cruiser Prado but still packs a spacious five-seat cabin loaded with tech. Inside, you’ll find a massive 50-inch head-up display, a large central touchscreen, a passenger-side screen, and a premium Devialet sound system—because even off-road warriors deserve luxury.
Powertrain & Performance: Hybrid Muscle for the Trails
Under the hood (and floor), the Leopard 5 runs on BYD’s DMO (Dual Mode Off-Road) plug-in hybrid system, pairing a 1.5L turbo engine with dual electric motors for a whopping 670 hp (500 kW) and 760 Nm (560 lb-ft) of torque. Power goes to all four wheels via an advanced 4WD system with three differential locks, making it a serious contender for rock crawling or desert runs.
A 30 kWh BYD Blade battery delivers 125 km (78 miles) of electric-only range (CLTC), while an 80L fuel tank stretches total range to an impressive 1,200 km (746 miles). For those who want even more capability, there’s an optional Cloud-P hydraulic active suspension (borrowed from the YangWang U8) for smoother off-road handling.
Pricing & Market Position: A Premium Off-Roader, But Not at YangWang Prices
Expected to cost between ¥400,000-600,000 ($55,000-$82,000), the Leopard 5 sits above most BYD models but below the ultra-luxury YangWang lineup. Fang Cheng Bao also teased the Leopard 8 (a larger flagship SUV) and plans an entry-level Leopard 3—covering all bases in the off-road market.
Global Ambitions: Will It Come to Your Market?
Initially launching in China with 100 dealerships, BYD might export the Leopard 5 under a different name—possibly as the BYD Denza B5 overseas. It shares its ladder-frame platform with the BYD Shark 6 ute but packs more power, hitting 0-100 km/h in just 4.8 seconds despite its 2.9-ton weight.
Key Features & Off-Road Cred
✔ Height-adjustable hydraulic suspension (optional)
✔ Electronic front & rear diff locks for serious traction
✔ Multiple drive modes, including a low-range setting
✔ 15.6-inch touchscreen, 12.3-inch digital dash, and 50-inch HUD
✔ 18-speaker audio, Nappa leather, panoramic sunroof
✔ 2,500 kg towing capacity (though diesel rivals like the Prado can haul more)
Rumors also suggest Denza might rebadge the YangWang U8, a full-size hybrid 4WD spotted in right-hand drive—hinting at global expansion.
BYD’s Strategy: An Electrified SUV for Every Buyer
BYD isn’t holding back—its goal is to dominate every SUV segment with advanced hybrid and EV options. As company execs put it: “We need an array of products for every segment—and that’s what we’ll deliver.”
So, what do you think? Could the Leopard 5 tempt you away from a traditional off-roader like the Toyota Land Cruiser?
